Where Do The Textiles Go?
One of the questions we always get asked at Thread Up Oxford, is what happens to the nearly 2 tons of textile materials we take in each month? So this month we thought we’d walk you through our process, let’s follow a bag full of textiles through our process!
When a community member brings in a bag of textiles the very first thing we do with it is to weigh it and record how much was dropped off. Once the information is recorded we take the items to be processed by our volunteers. Our dedicated volunteers carefully examine each item to determine how best to use it.
Top Quality - brand new or like-new items are:
Sold at our Uptown Threads thrift store to support our mission or purchased with vouchers received from local social service agencies.
Provided to local service organizations to assist individuals in hardship situations.
Good Quality - items with some wear or minor defects are:
Made available for free through our Freejects initiative.
Freejects are available right outside our Thread Up Oxford warehouse space at 5156 College Corner Pike (Tuesday - Friday from 11:00-4:00)
Used for upcycling projects
Poor Quality - items too damaged for reuse are:
Responsibly recycled through various partnerships
By following this process, we ensure that every item finds the best possible use, whether through reuse, repurposing or recycling. Thank you for supporting Thread Up Oxford and helping us reduce textile waste in our community!

Big Thanks to Our Members!
The Oxford community has really stepped up for Thread Up Oxford so far, 47 people have signed up for our Membership Program, which has raised $3,525 for Thread Up Oxford! This incredible support means the world to us and helps us keep our mission going strong.
With so many new members joining, it's getting a little tricky to keep track of everything in our trusty spreadsheet. So, we're rolling out Thread Up Oxford Membership Cards! These cards will make it easier to access your member perks, like discounts at both of our locations and free textile drop-offs.
If you're already a member, just ask about your card next time you stop in and we’ll get you set up. And don’t worry—the spreadsheet’s not going anywhere. We’ll still know you're a member, card or not. But we’re excited to make things smoother for you and our amazing volunteers.
Not a member yet? We can't wait to get you started! Thread Up Oxford members support our organization through their dues, and in return, they get some great perks: free textile processing for a full year, a 5% discount at both Thread Up Oxford and Uptown Threads, special pricing at our bag sales, and more.
Thanks again for being part of our community!
Help Keep Thread Up Oxford Going This Summer!
As summer approaches and many of our college student volunteers head home, Thread Up Oxford is calling on our local community to step in and help us continue our work to reduce waste, promote reuse, and serve our neighbors.
Our mission relies on the generous support of volunteers — people just like you — who give their time to keep our programs running smoothly. Whether you have a few hours a week or want to get involved in a larger project, there’s a place for you on our team!
Most of our volunteers assist at our warehouse at 5156 College Corner Pike, helping with processing and sorting textiles. But that’s just the beginning — we also welcome help with:
Community events
Fundraising
Managing social media
Data entry
Whatever your interests or skills, there’s a way you can make a difference. We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, and we’re especially eager to engage more local residents during the summer months!
Our regular volunteer hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 AM to 4 PM, but we also offer group volunteering opportunities that can be scheduled on weekdays or weekends. If your club, office, faith group, or friends are looking for a meaningful way to give back, we’d love to host you!
