Addressing Clothing Insecurity in our Community
In Butler County, Ohio, clothing insecurity remains a quiet but persistent challenge. In 2024, 11.9% of the county’s 399,542 residents lived in poverty; defined as earning less than $32,150 annually for a family of four. For these individuals and families, basic needs like food and housing often take precedence, leaving limited resources for essential clothing.
Clothing is more than just fabric, it is a key part of physical comfort, personal dignity, self-expression, and participation in everyday life. Whether it's a child needing a winter coat, a teen looking for school clothes, or an adult preparing for a job interview, access to appropriate clothing can make a powerful difference in someone’s life.
That’s where Thread Up Oxford’s Karma Bucks Program steps in. Originally designed to allow social service agencies to distribute vouchers for individuals in hardship to shop at Uptown Threads, our thrift store, the program provides more than just garments & home textiles. It offers choice, dignity, and the opportunity for individuals to select items that reflect their unique style and meet their specific needs.
We are excited to extend this initiative through the launch of Community Karma Bucks. This new branch of the program opens the door for everyone in our community to participate in the fight against clothing insecurity. With Community Karma Bucks, any individual can purchase a voucher to Uptown Threads, which can then be gifted to friends and family or donated directly to someone in need.
This expansion empowers the whole community to take part in meeting a basic human need, clothing, with compassion and intentionality. It turns everyday generosity into a practical tool for support, inclusion, and hope.
By working together, we can ensure that all Butler County residents, regardless of their circumstances, have access to the clothing they need not just to survive, but to thrive.
